What book influenced your life?
"Forever" by Judy Blume - I was forbidden from reading it in the 6th grade and it lost me a reading contest. I was devastated, but years later, I wrote to Ms. Blume to tell her, and she wrote a gracious letter back to me, along with a signed book. It inspired my strong moral belief against the banning of books.

Like CherMay, reading has always been a big part of my life. One of my favorite lines comes from Barbara Kingsolver's book Poisonwood Bible, when the mother describes how she survived her journey to the Congo and back to 1950s Georgia by saying she "filled the chinks in her soul with books from the public library." I have know the solace of that. One book that speaks for what I believe is The Reader by Bernhard Schlink, which tells the 1960s story of an older woman who had an affair with a sixteen year old, who later encountered her again when she was on trial for crimes committed as a Nazi prison guard. What he learns is how the inability to read so utterly altered her life and the devastating choices she made, like a horrific game of dominoes. I wish The Reader could be required reading for every high school student, despite the ill-fated affair - especially for those who proudly proclaim "I have never read a whole book in my life."

Reading was always a part of my life. My mom would read a book to my sister and I every night before bed. Stories she read us were classics such as, Hiawatha which no one ever knows and others. But what influenced my life was books that had a meaning such as "Roll of Thunder; Hear My Cry" I learned from that book that being color didn't matter and a no human being should be treated with disrespect just because they are of a different race, color, creed, or worships differently. Books are a part of me and shape my beliefs.

Letters to a Young Poet by Rainer Maria Rilke. I first read it in college during a semester abroad. I found that little book so inspiring as I was trying to figure out my own future path in both love and career. And now, as an adult, I still find my way back to that book every couple years as my life path still grows and changes.

Most books inspire and influence my life. Each book, unique on its own, helped to shape part of me. From Barney books to Peter Pan to Wuthering Heights and Jane Erye.
